Al Gaffal Traditional 60ft Dhow Race 2013
Earlier at the port of Dubai, the event was organised to honour pearl drivers. After sometimes, it instigated at the small isolated island of Sur Bu Na’air, which was located around 50 nautical miles west of the UAE. In 1991, there were only 53 dhow ships for the first competition and each was 43 feet long.
Now, it has become one of the biggest events in the UAE featuring around 100 traditional boats, which are 60 feet. Over 3000 participants have sailed the waters of the Gulf for being crowned as the winner.
Despite a modern look with magnificently polished hulls and crisp sails, the race has maintained the traditions by following the old strict rules. Starting at 7:00 am from the Mina Seyahi, the dhows head around Sur Bu Na'air Island and again back to the Mina Seyahi.
