The Pandemic’s Influence on Interior Design
COVID-19 up-ended life in Dubai and across the world. Very little was left untouched by the global pandemic, including interior design. When our lives entered uncertainty, we sought to make sanctuaries out of our homes, choosing colours and décor with natural essences. As we get further into 2021, keep an eye on these new interior design trends inspired by the global pandemic.
Turning Homes into Sanctuaries
Since mid-2020, we’ve had time to critically think about how we can lay out our homes for the ultimate comfort. In 2021, people will be drawn to cool colours, such as blues and greens, because they have calming effects—which we’re all seeking in these uncertain times. Interior designers predict that people will use the colours of the sea, sand, and sky for a natural aesthetic. We will also see a rise in earthy tones, such as browns and oranges, in living rooms to promote conversation and interaction as people begin to open their homes again to friends and family.
The desire to create a soothing sanctuary doesn’t apply to only colours; individuals will be choosing furniture and décor based on their materials and textures. Wood and stone cabinetry will be popular, and so will botanical patterned furniture. Tactile furniture, such as velvet couches or fluffy carpets, will also have their moment to shine in 2021 since they promote relaxation.
Getting Rid of Blandness
Now that 2020 is behind us, we’re ready to spice things up. Homeowners and residents are saying goodbye to bland neutrals and hello to fun, vibrant colours. This is not the neon colours of the '70s, but warm hues like burnt orange, ochre, and teal. From paint to carpet and cushions to wall decor, people are adding a pop of colour to bring a bit of excitement into their living spaces.
Eliminating Distractions
Interior design is doing more than just beautifying corners of our homes; it’s also improving each room’s functionality. Everyone around Dubai is considering how they can zhuzh up their home offices for minimal distractions. People will be seeking ways to delineate workspaces from the rest of the home for privacy and silence. In homes where separate spaces aren't available, residents will use privacy screens. Carpets, furniture, accessories, and noise-cancelling paint or boards will be used to minimize noise. Matte and textured surfaces will be a staple in home workspaces because it holds the light and draws the eye, both of which improve focus. The design of home office spaces is taking a priority in 2021 as people create permanent work areas.
2021 Interior Design Trends
The global pandemic has brought about many changes, and interior design did not go unaffected. Everything from the living room to the home office will see more colour, more textures, and more natural essences. It's out with the boring and in with the soothing.
